GREYSCAPES: I just came across this graphic photograph by Elliot Erwitt. It hit me right away. There’s something frightening yet intriguing and attention grabbing about this photograph.
I’ve been searching for the title of this work and haven’t managed to find anything. I imagine that it was taken back in the 1960s, along with a lot of his other famous work. The large tower seen this image is part of the National Congress of Brazil in Brasília, designed by Oscar Niemeyer during the late 1950s/early 1960s. The House of Parliament office tower appears as this foreboding, austere structure, taking up a relatively small amount of space, yet making its presence felt.
The man standing below the building looks up, and you can almost feel his awe, despite not being able to see his face. Seeing the diffference in size between the two, you can feel the silent power of the architecture here.
The dome seen on the left is the seat of the Senate. Unseen in this image, but present on the right hand side of the building (at least from this angle) is a bowl shaped building if the seat of the Chamber of Deputies.
An intriguing depiction of some incredible architecture by a pretty incredible photographer.
